Most local transactions are straightforward. These precautions help protect you from common scams, unsafe meetings, and dishonest listings.
Keep communication on eTRADEIT
- Use eTRADEIT messaging while discussing the item and arranging the meeting.
- Be cautious if someone immediately asks you to communicate by text, email, or another app.
- Never share your password, login code, financial information, or government identification.
- eTRADEIT will never ask for your password through a buyer or seller message.
Review the listing and the person
- Read the complete description and examine every photograph.
- Ask questions about the item's age, condition, damage, ownership, and included parts.
- Be cautious with newly created accounts, inconsistent answers, or copied-looking photographs.
- A trust badge or positive review may help, but it is never a guarantee.
Inspect before paying
- Whenever practical, inspect and test the item in person before exchanging money.
- Confirm that the item matches the description, photographs, model number, and agreed price.
- For electronics, vehicles, tools, and higher-value items, verify that the item works properly.
- Do not allow pressure, urgency, or a supposed competing buyer to rush your decision.
Meet in a safe public location
- Meet during daylight hours in a busy, well-lit public place.
- Police-station exchange areas, bank parking lots, and staffed businesses are strong choices.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Bring another adult with you, especially for expensive items or unfamiliar locations.
Protect your home and location
- Do not post your full home address in a public listing.
- Share only the general item location until a legitimate meeting is arranged.
- If an item must be collected from your home, avoid meeting alone and keep buyers outside whenever possible.
- Remove personal documents, medication, valuables, keys, and visible security information from the area.
Use payment methods carefully
- Agree on the final price and payment method before meeting.
- Count cash carefully and check larger bills.
- Confirm digital payments inside your own payment account—not through an email or screenshot.
- Never accept an overpayment or send money back to a buyer.
Common warning signs of a scam
- The buyer offers more than your asking price.
- Someone wants to pay before asking normal questions about the item.
- The person claims a relative, courier, mover, or delivery company will collect the item.
- You are asked to purchase gift cards, pay a fee, or send a verification code.
- You receive a payment screenshot but cannot confirm the money in your own account.
- The seller refuses an inspection, provides conflicting information, or pressures you to send a deposit.
- The deal appears dramatically cheaper or easier than similar local offers.
Choose the meeting place before sharing personal information
A public meeting point protects both the buyer and the seller. You do not need to disclose either person's home address to arrange most local transactions.
- Meet during business hours whenever possible.
- Choose a location with people, lighting, and visible cameras.
- Avoid isolated parking lots, unfamiliar homes, and last-minute location changes.
- Do not enter a stranger's vehicle.
- Leave immediately if the person or situation does not match what was agreed.

- Never pay a stranger's shipping, insurance, courier, or account-upgrade fee.
- Never rely only on a screenshot, email receipt, or pending-payment notice.
- Never return money from an overpayment.
- Never provide a one-time security or verification code.
